Coffee Beans:
How Long Does Coffee Last?
The shelf life of coffee depends on several factors, including whether it is whole bean or ground, how it is stored, and its packaging. Here's a general guideline:
Whole Bean Coffee
Unopened Bags: Whole bean coffee can last up to 6-9 months past the roast date when stored in a cool, dark place in its original, unopened packaging.
Opened Bags: Once opened, whole bean coffee is best consumed within 2-4 weeks for optimal freshness. If stored properly in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture, it can last up to 3-6 months.
Ground Coffee
Unopened Bags: Ground coffee generally has a shorter shelf life than whole bean coffee. Unopened bags can last up to 3-5 months past the roast date when stored in a cool, dark place.
Opened Bags: Once opened, ground coffee should be consumed within 1-2 weeks for the best flavor. If stored in an airtight container away from light, heat, and moisture, it can last up to 1-2 months.
Storage Tips
Airtight Containers: Always store coffee (whole bean and ground) in airtight containers to keep out moisture and air.
Cool, Dark Places: Store coffee in a cool, dark place, such as a pantry. Avoid places that are exposed to light, heat, and humidity (e.g., above the stove or on a kitchen counter).
Freezing Coffee: While freezing coffee is not ideal for maintaining optimal flavor, it can extend the shelf life. If you choose to freeze your coffee, make sure to use an airtight container to prevent moisture and odors from affecting the coffee. Only take out as much coffee as you need, and avoid repeatedly thawing and refreezing.
By following these storage guidelines, you can help ensure your coffee remains fresh and flavorful for as long as possible.
How to store coffee beans to extend its shelf life?
Coffee does degrade over time, and it degrades faster depending on the surface area - which means that the whole beans will keep longer than ground coffee. The best way to store these beans is to place them in an air-tight container in the freezer. You should grind fresh only the amount you plan to use that day to avoid unnecessary exposure. Storing coffee in this way will keep out moisture and other contaminants.
How to store ground coffee to extend its shelf life?
The best way to store ground coffee to keep it fresh longer is by storing it in your freezer immediately after use. Storing coffee in the freezer does not freeze the coffee, so it is always ready for use without any defrosting.
Decaf Coffee?
Our decaf coffee is decaffeinated using the Swiss Water® Process. This is a clean decaffeinating method which uses 100% green coffee extract and carbon to filter the caffeine out. This method ensures only caffeine is removed to keep the original quality of the beans intact.
Why is freshly roasted coffee direct from the roaster better than pre-packaged coffee from the supermarket?
Essentially, all roasted coffee originates from a roaster, whether that roaster is a large international multi-brand business or a small-batch local roaster. The difference from buying direct from the roaster versus from the supermarket is basically, control. Supermarkets these days are well equipped to source good coffees, single origins and beans, however their buying processes can increase the time before it gets to the consumer.
A local roaster adapts its production based on demand and is 100% committed to producing quality, consistency and fresh roasted coffee. "Fresh" means it was roasted prior to consumption and it has been through the degassing process, which is an essential process to release CO2 from the beans. And I'd like to bust-a-myth here - not all direct-from-the-roaster coffees are more expensive! We are on par with the supermarket prices, and we can guarantee you quality and freshness and we deliver directly to your door.
